HST 286 - Women in South Asia

Course Units: 1
(Not offered this Academic Year) This course takes a historical approach towards the topic of gender and sexuality in South Asia, with a particular, though not exclusive, focus on the history of women in the region.  The course has three major goals: first, to analyze the colonial state and its policies with respect to women and gender relations; second, to study gender relations, women’s voices and women’s movements within the context of nationalist struggles in the post-colonial era; and third, to understand the complexities of trying to recover the “voice” of heterogeneous groups of women in South Asia, divided along lines of caste, class, region, occupation and religion.  Study material will include academic texts, films and popular television from the subcontinent.
