AAH 102 - Medieval Art and Architecture of Northern Europe, 5th-15th Century

(Fall; Matthew) An introductory survey of sculpture and decorative arts, manuscripts, painting and architecture from the seventh through fourteenth centuries north of the Alps. Examines the emergence of western medieval culture and attitudes toward the arts, as well as western European views of its Byzantine and Muslim neighbors. In addition to introducing major monuments and patrons, students will be introduced to the materials and techniques used to produce the art and architecture of the Middle Ages.
