AAH 214 - The Golden Age of Venice: Art and Architecture in “The Most Serene Republic”

Course Units: 1
(Not offered this Academic Year) An introduction to the art and architecture of the Republic of Venice during the period of its economic, political, and artistic “golden age” - from the 14th through the 17th centuries. We will consider the many relationships between the material culture of the city, its maritime and land-based empires, and Venice’s role as a commercial and cultural power in Western Eurpe during a period of great change. Objects and structures ranging from oil paintings to the new invention of printed books, not to mention the building in which they were created and used, will be examined from multiple points of view: materials, fabrication and workshop practice, artistic reputation, patronage and costs, site and functions, innovation and tradition.
