EGL 203 - The Age of Heroes: The Anglo-Saxon EraCourse Units: 1 (Not Offered this Academic Year) (Offered twice every four years) In 410 the Romans abandoned Britain, withdrawing to the continent just as pagan Germanic invaders began to challenge the island’s native Picts and Celts. In 1066 the Duke of Normandy crossed the Channel and kicked a Danish king off the throne of a fully Christianized England. In between these two events lies the matter of this course: the literature of the Anglo- Saxon era, which, despite (or perhaps because of) successive waves of foreign invasion and political disunity, developed arguably the most distinctive and sophisticated culture in all of early medieval Europe. Prerequisite(s): EGL 100 or EGL 101 or EGL 102 or a grade of 5 on the AP English Literature or Language test. CC: HUL, HUM
