AAH 287 - Tibetan ArtCourse Units: 1 (Not offered 2013-14) This course is intended as a comprehensive survey of Tibetan art. It will analyze representative works from major periods in Tibetan history, including architecture, painting, and sculpture. In addition to the styles and iconographies employed in their creation, an emphasis will be placed on understanding the cultural, political, and religious significance of the works. The course will begin with an introduction of a variety of fanciful and subjective “representations” of Tibet and its art in the West. It will then familiarize students- following the historical chronology-with scholarly achievements of the last two decades in Tibetan studies, which have radically changed our understanding of Tibetan art.
