EGL 301 - Jr. Seminar: Fiction Workshop: Ghost Stories Course Units: 1.0 In this intermediate-level fiction writing course, students will read and write short stories. The central theme or genre will vary by term (eg. Contemporary Ghost Stories, Activist
Fiction, Climate Fiction), and each section will present opportunities for students to develop their fiction writing skills, focusing on dialogue, characterization, description, formal experimentation, point-of-view, etc. This is a workshop course intended for students with experience and interest in writing fiction. Students will write their own fiction, and will also learn through reading published contemporary fiction and other students’ stories, considering the choices each writer makes and how these choices shape reader experiences. Much of our class time will be devoted to critiques of students' stories. Students will receive thoughtful feedback on their writing, and will also provide such
feedback to their classmates, and should expect to write between 25-50 pages of fiction, and to refine approximately 20 pages of their fiction as a final portfolio. Prerequisite(s): It is strongly recommended that students have already taken EGL 294 . One 100-level and two 200-level English courses or instructor’s permission. Previous workshop experience is recommended. CQ: HUL, WAC, HUM Note: This course fulfills a requirement for Creative Writing minors for a seminar-level workshop.
