Requirements for the Major:


Twelve courses plus one full theater practicum credit. (Total 13 credits). Students are encouraged to focus their studies in a single or combined core track such as Performance, Design, Technology, Directing/Making, or Critical Analysis/Theory. Elective courses will be chosen in consultation with a major advisor to support a cohesive plan of study. 

  • 3 Required Foundational Practice Courses

  • 2 Required History& Context courses

  • 6 elective courses (one of which may consist of an additional three practicum courses) 

    • Recommended electives are Intermediate Acting, Directing, Stage Management, any course in a design specialty, Solo Dance Composition, or one of the critical analysis and context courses. Electives should be chosen in consultation with a major advisor, and students are encouraged to follow a core track in a single or combined area of emphasis. 
    • A minimum of two of these courses must be at the 200 or 300 level. 
  • 1 Senior Experience 

    • Fulfilled through a capstone project as part of ATH 496 - Senior Seminar. Students wishing to submit a proposal for ATH 497 - Senior Thesis Project, will be expected to have completed their electives in a core track, chosen in consultation with their major advisor. Approval to enroll in the Senior Thesis Project is subject to faculty approval. 
  • 3 Practicum courses

    • One of these courses must be ATH 052: Stage Management, the remaining practicum courses should be in an area that supports the student’s core studies. Production practicums may consist of any combination of ATH 050, ADA 051, ATH 052, ATH 053, or ATH 054. 
  • Note: Students are encouraged to take practicums and courses in Dance as well as Theater, and may use a Dance technique practicum towards their full practicum credit requirement. A maximum of two full credits of practicum courses may be used to count towards graduation, and a student will only receive credit for one practicum course per term, regardless of how many practicum courses are completed during that term. 

Requirements for Honors in Theater:


Candidates must satisfy college qualifications for honors, hold at least a 3.8 or better GPA in department courses and receive a grade of at least “A minus” for their Senior Project. Requires faculty approval, and the expectation that a student has completed a core track of cohesive study leading to the Senior Project.
