CLS 111 - Ancient Iraq: History and Religion

Course Units: 1
(Not offered in 2013-14) Ancient Iraq is often termed ‘the cradle of civilization’ since it is here that agriculture, urbanism, and writing first occurred. This course examines the early history of Iraq (ancient Mesopotamia) from the development of agriculture and permanent settlements through to the establishment of the first cities and states, down to about 1600 BCE. The class examines the social and economic contexts in which early Mesopotamian culture emerged, and it also gives attention to religious and religion-political ideas. LCC
