HST 105 - Comparative Global History to 1800

Course Units: 1
(Fall; Sargent) Provides a “bird’s-eye” view of human history from the emergence of human “civilization” in the Fertile Crescent to the European conquest of the Americas. Surveys the comparative development of the world’s continents, regions, and empires and investigates how expansion of the “human web” facilitated both cooperation and conflict among the world’s peoples. Pays particular attention to environmental and ecological determinism, the influence of technology on economic growth, the rise of “portable” religions, and the interaction of culture and politics.
