HST 219 - Revolutions in the Global South

Course Units: 1.0
(Winter: Peterson) Across human history in the modern age, revolutionary processes have defined politics, culture, and economic systems. They have erupted in virtually every part of the world, spread from region to region, and led to dramatic changes. Most often scholars and students have focused on revolutions in the Western world. However, this transnational and thematic course will explore the history of revolutions and revolutionaries in the global South, or the “Third World” as it was commonly known. Drawing on secondary and primary sources, students will learn about a wide variety of revolutions in Africa, Asia, and the Caribbean, ranging from anti-colonial revolts, revolutionary socialist states, opposition politics, and various movements focused on environmentalism, feminism, and indigenous rights.
