EGL 224 - 19th-Century Novel Course Units: 1.0 (Not Offered this Academic Year) The golden age of the novel examined in its historical, intellectual, and literary contexts. Topics will include satire and the novel, realism vs. gothicism, fiction and the visual arts (especially book illustration), the impact of Darwin, fiction and the role of women, the city vs. the country, the individual vs. society, the novel and commerce, fiction and imperialism. Prerequisite(s): One 100-level English course or a score of 5 on the AP English Language or Literature and Composition test. CC: HUL, HUM, WAC
