CLS 159 - The Ancient World & Race Course Units: 1 Learn how the ancients thought about race and ethnicity-and how the reception of the ancient world shapes and is shaped in turn by modern notions of race and ethnicity. Investigate how categories of race and ethnicity are presented in the literature and artistic works of Greece and Rome. Case studies will pay particular attention to such concepts as: notions of racial formation and origins; ancient theories of ethnic superiority; and linguistic, religious and cultural differentiation as a basis for ethnic differentiation.
