Questions of poverty, pandemic, pollution, migration, race, religious difference, and warfare are among the most pressing global challenges of the 21st century. However, these issues were not alien to premodern societies. In this class, we will analyse primary sources from Mesoamerica, Africa, western and eastern Europe, the Middle East, Central Asia, the Indian subcontinent (and Indian Ocean), East Asia, and Oceania to understand how the peoples of the global medieval world responded to them.
