GER 401 - Meeting the Other: Migration and Multiculturalism in Contemporary Germany Course Units: 1.0 This course studies post-World War II German cultural and literary history through the lens of migration. How are memories of migration included (or excluded) in national histories? By analyzing recent cultural productions by minorities (literature, music and films) with respect to national, cultural, and sexual self-representations in the context of social and political developments, this course will contextualize controversies and relate specific events to broader questions of economic globalization, the recruitment of “guest workers,” refugees and border regimes, xenophobia and racism, citizenship legislation, education and national identity, religion and ritual, media and popular culture.
