AAH 116 - Rome in the Age of Michelangelo Course Units: 1.0 The most famous artist and the most famous city in the history of Western culture. How did the much earlier and long-lived fame of Rome affect its most famous artist, and how did both interact with the equally long-lived institution of the Christian papacy? We will examine how culture, language, politics, warfare and religion all intertwined in the art and architecture of the period, particularly as exemplified in the career of Michelangelo, a native of Florence who spent the majority of his working life in Rome.
