MTH 065 -  Mathematics & Social Justice

Course Units: 1.0
How can (and should) mathematics play a vital role in upholding the essential tenets of social justice, such as equity, diversity and racial justice, access and participation, and human rights? The fundamental mathematical topics we will consider are selected from (but are not limited to!) the following major subject areas: systems of linear equations; mathematical modeling; probability and statistics; graph theory; voting/social choice theory; and gerrymandering. We will approach our study of the mathematical concepts in this course through the lens of social justice. CC: QMR & JDQR ISP: STS Note: Not open to students who have passed (or have AP credit for) a college calculus course.
