PHL 220 - 20th Century Philosophy Course Units: 1 This course is an introduction to ‘continental’ philosophy, i.e., philosophy from the European mainland, in the 20th century. The course focuses on traditions like phenomenology, existentialism, critical theory, structuralism, and postmodernism. Figures that may be covered include Nietzsche, Husserl, Heidegger, Sartre, Beauvoir, Fanon, Adorno & Horkheimer, and Foucault. Questions to be explored include: Can modern science leave any room for meaning or value in human existence? Are humans essentially different from other objects studied by science, like rocks, pyramids, or bears. CC: HUM
