EXP 202 -  Hometown Health Internship

Course Units: 1
Students will participate in an onsite internship with Hometown Health, a Federally Qualified Health Center located in Schenectady New York.  A Federally Qualified Health Center is a community-based health care provider that receives federal funds from the Health Research & Services Administration to provide primary care services in underserved areas (https://www.hrsa.gov/opa/eligibility-and-registra tion/health-centers/fqhc/index.html) Students will interact directly with clinic patients helping to identify gaps in the social determinants of health and then connecting patients with essential resources to help close them.  Students will devote an average of ten hours a week to the internship experiential component of the course.   Hometown Health will train students on assigned projects and provide mentorship throughout the term.   In addition to experiential work, students will meet once a week as a class.  Readings, reflective writings and other assignments will expand student understanding of the social determinants of health, racial health inequities and gaps in care.
