SPN 259 -  Otherworldly Latin America?

Course Units: 1
In this class, students will learn how magical realism, fantastic literature and Sci-Fi represent and comment on the Latin America region, its people, and the future of the planet. At the same time, the course aims to challenge the idea of Latin America as only an exotic place and to understand the cultural productions studied- such as literature, movies and podcasts- in relation to intersectional categories like race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation and class. By the end of the course, students will develop a complex understanding of what I called “otherworldly Latin America. Prerequisite(s): SPN-201 or SPN-202, or any course numbered SPN 250-299 or AP Spanish score of 4+; and/or being a heritage speaker, or permission of the instructor.
